On Tuesday, June 27, over 100 people turned out to celebrate Youngstown’s 221st birthday at the Tyler Mahoning Valley Historical Center in downtown Youngstown.

Attendees were treated to cookies, cake and a the singing of “Happy Birthday” led by Mahoning Valley Historical Society director Bill Lawson, Youngstown Mayor John McNally and Downtown Youngstown Partnership organizer Ellie Platt.

Those in attendance also got a sneak preview of a sample of the new Downtown Youngstown Self-Guided Walking Tour stations (which will be installed later this summer) as well as a two-hour walking tour led by Lawson and CityScape associate director Phil Kidd,

Now in its second year, Happy Birthday, Youngstown! is a celebration of the city’s founding with took place on June 27, 1796 by John Young and his expedition crew.

Last year’s inaugural event was initiated by Youngstown Rotary in partnership with CityScape and MVHS. This year, Downtown Youngstown Partnership – a component of CityScape – took the lead in helping organize the event.
